In Ellis Radiance, the Ellis River glows just before Glen Ellis Falls, where silky cascades spill over silver and orange rocks. Golden leaves gather in the foreground, mingling with still puddles that reflect the pink radiance of sunset-tinged clouds. In the distance, golden trees stand aglow, their brilliance framed by rugged walls and the fading light.
The crowds of the day had left, and the trail was empty. It was getting dark, but then, for a few moments, a pink glow appeared in the sky. I had to move fast. Ever seen a photographer move fast? Tripod, camera, slippery rock. I left my camera bag on the trail as I climbed down the wet, slippery slope. I had time for just one exposure, and then the glow was gone.
Sure, there are countless photos of silky flowing water over rocks, of floating leaves in puddles, of glowing yellow foliage. This image has all of that. But what I really love, and what keeps drawing me back to this photo, is the reflection in the puddle. The pink and magenta reflection and the fallen leaves simply complement each other. For a moment, it was like “the light shines in the darkness”—and then it was gone.
