We were driving in Allegheny National Forest and found ourselves on a dirt road. As we came to an intersection, we entered an open area where a forest fire had come through, most likely the year before. The trees had lost their canopies in the fire — they stood there dark and stark among the glowing ferns. I took some photos, but the scene was calling for something different, something unusual. The light was asking for something more abstract. So I started painting with light through the lens and next thing I know, Watercolor Forest was born. But why watercolor? It's the medium I enjoy most in painting, and the most delicate of all the painting disciplines. It is the most fleeting, like a forest in the fire. Then the ferns come in, then new trees, and the scene is gone within a few years.
